Since we
began the four divisions under one roof, we have had great response and
support from fans, media, coaches, wrestlers and officials. This has
been especially true once we moved to the Palace of Auburn Hills. Their
staff has been extremely cooperative, going out of their way to make
sure that everyone is satisfied.
When I
began putting together a staff for this tournament, I didn’t realize the
amount of people it would take. I started by finding a few individuals
who would assist in handling the 160 volunteers that make up our staff.
This includes, management, security, table workers, medical staff,
officials, computer people, tappers, timers/scorers and others. I
started by looking for an assistant who would work with me and we would
compliment each other. That person was Scott Strickler. He has been
part of this team since the inception and this event would not be
what it is without him. I then added others who have stepped up and
taken over certain areas of the event. These individuals and others, volunteer their time to
ensure this tournament is a success. Many of these volunteers work
numerous hours, prior to the event starting.
This
tournament has been growing in attendance, each and every year we have
been at the Palace. That means that everyone involved is doing what is
needed to make sure your stay is appreciated. We always look at finding
new ways to improve from the year before. This year we have added the
“friendsofwrestling.com web site.
This will be an informative site, listing many feature articles about
the tournament as well as other interesting information. A newsletter
will be going out on a quarterly basis to all Friends of Wrestling
alumni. This newsletter will keep members informed on everything going
on with wrestling. Friends
of Wrestling, was developed, to help raise money, to offset the cost of
the event. It takes 160 people to run this event and everyone does more
then expected, in order to make it a success. This format is different
then any other sporting event the MHSAA has. They understand that, but
there are certain areas, that the MHSAA can not pay for. The gift for
the wrestlers, the regional newspaper and other small areas, are not
covered by the MHSAA. Mike Cavender of MC Precision has been a major
sponsor, by donating the last three years. His donation makes up the
majority that we collect. We are greatly appreciate his support. Many
other individuals have stepped up and donated also. This is needed to
offset the costs that are not picked up by the MHSAA. My goal is to
raise enough money and have in the account by December, each year, so I
can take care of the tournament, without having the money worries. You
have to remember that we have 896 wrestlers, 1500 coaches and 160
volunteer workers. This tournament, the largest of its kind in the
country, is considered a state-of-the-art event. We would like to
continue that, but we need your help. |
